🔃 Updated December 2023: We’ve included ways to buy tickets online as well as a live widget from the Arkansas Lottery website with the latest jackpot.

What Is Powerball?

Powerball is a national lottery program coordinated by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) that comprises the lottery boards for each participating state.

Currently, 45 U.S. states plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands participate in the Powerball lottery program.

The first Powerball game was held in 1992 when there were two weekly drawings, although the number calling frequency increased to three weekly games in 2021. The drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 pm Eastern Time.

You must purchase your ticket 59 minutes before the upcoming drawing time to be eligible for the current game.

Since 2015, the game has called six numbers instead of five. While it’s more challenging to win as the odds are now 1 in 292.2 million compared to 1 in 175 million with only five numbers, the jackpots are more enormous, and there are many smaller prizes of $2 million or less.

How to Play Powerball

Ticket buyers must match all six numbers to win the grand prize, although you can also win a few bucks by matching the red “Powerball,” which is the final number called. Other smaller rewards are available if you match several numbers.

You can select each number manually or choose randomly-drawn numbers when the lottery ticket vendor prints your ticket. The first five numbers are from 1 to 69, and the Powerball is from 1 to 26.

A basic Powerball ticket costs $2 and only requires you to pick six numbers.

Power Play

You can opt into the Power Play feature for an additional dollar ($3 total), where a bonus 7th number is called. This number will either be 2,3,4,5 or 10.

This number is the bonus multiplier on qualifying tickets.

If you match the Power Play and have a ticket with a partial match, you can win up to $10 million.

To win the maximum Power Play cash prize, your original numbers must win $1 million (all five whites but not the Powerball). Then, if the Power Play number is 10, you can receive $10 million instead.

Who Can Buy Powerball Tickets?

You must be 18 years or older to buy a Powerball ticket in most states. However, you must be at least 19 in Nebraska and 21 in Arizona, Iowa, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

It’s best to live in a participating U.S. state or territory to buy tickets. However, you can cross state lines if your state doesn’t participate. For example, Nevada residents go to Arizona or California.

Which States Don’t Have Powerball?

Unfortunately, you cannot buy a Powerball ticket in these states:

  • Alabama
  • Alaska
  • Hawaii
  • Nevada
  • Utah

If your state doesn’t sell Powerball tickets, you can have a friend or family member living in participating state purchase on your behalf. If you win, your lottery winnings are subject to income taxes for your home state (even if you can’t buy the ticket there).

Where to Buy Powerball Tickets in Your State

If your state participates in Powerball or Mega Millions, there are several places to buy tickets at local stores. Gas stations, convenience stores, and grocery stores are the most likely to sell Powerball tickets.

Many Walmart stores (and other retail brands) also have self-service vending machines to buy lottery tickets and scratchers.

How to Buy Powerball Tickets Online

Your state may also let you buy Powerball tickets online through these three platforms:

  • 🏆 Jackpot.com – Massachusetts, Texas, Ohio and New York only. 🆓 Free lottery ticket with first purchase.

Summary

As a lottery alternative, you may want to try games that pay real money, like Blackout Bingo or Bingo Clash, without placing your own money on the line.
