  • Monthly fees are low compared to other banks, and easily waved on most accounts.

Cons:

  • Interest rates on deposit products are not competitive with the higher-paying online banks.
  • Limited in-network ATM network.
  • Secondary checking account fees are high compared to competing banks.
  • You must live in one of the eight states – plus the District of Columbia – where the bank operates.

Should You Open an Account with M&T Bank?

The main limitation with M&T Bank is that it’s a true regional bank. That means you must live in one of the eight states and the District of Columbia where the bank operates. But if you do, M&T Bank offers an excellent combination of online and mobile banking, with the full range of banking services.

Their deposit rates are certainly nowhere near the top of the industry, though they are well above national bank averages. However, they offer every loan type needed and will be of special interest to anyone who is self-employed or operates a small business or corporation. Since they specialize in business banking, if you make use of those services it might be a convenient choice for your personal banking needs as well.
