Car Manufacturer App & Data Privacy Request Pages

Your car, and it's associated app, could be sending your driving data to insurance companies.

If you are uncomfortable with your insurance company knowing this, there are ways to stop it.

Turn Off Data Sharing in the App

Every app is different but you want to look in your app's settings and look for anything resembling data sharing. It may be listed under Data Usage or Data Privacy.

We have Toyota vehicles and it's located under Profile -> Account -> Data Privacy Portal -> Select your vehicle -> Insure Connect -> Manage Consent -> Decline.

You want to make sure disable sharing data with third-parties, rather than data sharing to your manufacturer (as it can impact your SOS features).

Here's what different manufacturers call their insurance sharing programs:

  • Audi – Audi Connect
  • BMW – BMW CarData
  • Ford – FordPass / Driving Data
  • GM – OnStar Smart Driver
  • Honda – Driver Feedback
  • Hyundia – Driving Score
  • Kia – Driving Score
  • Mazda – Connected Services
  • Mitsubishi – Driving Score
  • Nissan – NissanConnect Driving Score
  • Stellantis – Mobilisights
  • Subaru – Starlink driving data features
  • Toyota – Insure Connect
  • Volkswagen – DriveView

Yes… it's annoyingly complex and your app may be similar.

States That Require Companies to Let You Opt Out

California was the first state to require companies to let you opt out of this data collection back in 2020 and now many states require it.

However, because some states require it, some manufacturers (like Ford, Toyota, GM, and Subaru) have allowed customers in all states the right to opt out.

List of states with applicable privacy laws:

  • Arkansas (law effective July 1, 2026)
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Kentucky
  • Maryland
  • Minnesota
  • Montana
  • Nebraska
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Virginia

Filing a Privacy Request with Each Manufacturer

Curious to see what data they have about you? You can submit a privacy request through your manufacturer's privacy portal.

It takes a long time though. I just submitted one for Toyota and they said it could take 45 days. FORTY FIVE DAYS!

This is also where you can find out the process for opting out.

Here are the privacy request pages for the major car brands:

Finally, you can request your car data from data brokers too:

Again, it'll take a long time. And it may not even have anything, but the request just takes a few minutes and you may discover more than you expected.
